Summary:

An Electrical Engineer in Training in the Electrical and Software Engineering department of SKF Magnetic Bearings has the primary purpose of developing new magnetic bearing products for MSU and the support of electrical hardware and software for existing product lines when required.  This position is responsible for:

 

Job Purpose

We are seeking a highly motivated, technically oriented Mechanical Engineer to engage in the design and manufacture of magnetic levitation bearings, incorporating high-speed digital control systems.  You will provide engineering support for design, prototype assembly and validation testing of mechatronic systems, and serial manufacturing.

  • Product development following an agile V-model process.
  • Writing and reviewing of product requirements, design specifications, verification and validation test plans and reports.
  • Simulation of electronic circuits and electromagnetic machines/devices
  • Development of novel ideas for improving product cost, quality and performance
  • Performing and documenting hardware and software testing, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Creation and maintenance of technical documentation for product manufacturing
  • Coding of processors and FPGAs
  • Following SKF Ethical, EHS, Quality and Product Material Compliance policies

 

Key Responsibilities

Provide technical support to the Electrical/Software Engineering team:

  • Mentoring and direction of electrical engineering internship students
  • Ensuring that engineering work meets the requirements outlined in the Professional Practice Management Plan

Product Development

  • These are the typical activities performed by an electrical engineer.
  • Creation of V-cycle development model documents for product development
  • Creation of schematics and PCB layouts
  • Creation of Boundary Diagrams, DFMEA’s, P-Diagrams, PFMEA's, etc
  • Simulation using P-spice, PSIM, Matlab, Magnetic FEA of magnetic circuits etc
  • Programming of embedded processors and FPGAs with unit tests
  • Design for manufacturability
  • Safety risk analysis
  • Performing verification and validation testing of hardware and software

Project Management:

  • Create project charters and follow the project management plan for product development and process improvement initiatives which include the following activities:
  • Create project schedules.
  • Create quote estimates for labor and materials.
  • Technical risk management
  • Interfacing with customers

 Creation and Maintenance of Technical Documentation:

  • Creation of manufacturing documentation – assembly instructions, BOMs, PCDs, production test plans.
  • Technical report writing
  • Track changes to documentation using the ECO process
  • Product and Process Improvements:
  • Evaluation of product designs and processes for optimization and cost reduction
  • Participate in business excellence and lean engineering initiatives

  • Education:
  • Engineering Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Registered, or be able to register, as a Professional Engineer or EIT with APEGA

Experience:

  • Experience with product design, manufacturing processes, and process design

Knowledge (technical/practical/managerial):

  • Knowledge of magnetic circuits
  • Knowledge of closed loop control.
  • Analog and digital electronic design and analysis.
  • Power electronic design an asset
  • Quality methodology (i.e. CPAs, 8Ds, DFMEAs, PFMEAs, etc)
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting procedures.
  • Knowledge of embedded software for processors and FPGA programming (i.e. C, C++, VHDL, Verilog, etc)
  • Knowledge of Linux and real time operating systems
  • Knowledge of software development tools (i.e. GIT, IDEs, debuggers, etc)
  • Knowledge of software for programming PC applications (i.e. Python, C#, VBA etc)
